Richter Wehlener Sundial GG Ancient Vines Dry 2020 (750ml/12)
Tasting Notes
The “Wehlener Sonnenuhr” (“Sun dial”) vineyard produces very elegant, minerally and refined wines. The steep stony, dark grey slate vineyard is situated on the right hand river, and faces south-southwest. The sunshine naturally heats up the terroir extremely well and keeps the temperature ideally during the night. Rieslings from this vineyard are world wide known for their longevity and ageing potential. Vines are extremely old (120 years) and uncrafted.
Healthy and perfectly ripened grapes had been carefully hand picked middle of October 2020. Six hours of maceration was done prior to gentle pressing. Fermentation was done in traditional old oak barrels (Fuder) by natural yeast. Up to bottling 13th July 2021 the wine aged on it’s yeast and was just filtered once by diatomaceous earth.
This wine boasts notes of white peach, herbs, fine spices and floral elements. The wine is hugely focused but beautifully deep on the palate. A touch of zest frames the flavors at the moment and enhances the tart side in the nicely firm and focused finish. The aftertaste is simply a thing of beauty as layer upon layer of fine fruity flavors are enhanced by minerals, spices and herbs. This hugely impressive dry Riesling now only needs a few years of bottle aging to reveal its splendor.
