About the Winery
Pilar Just and Xavier Peñas grew up in what would become the Montsant D.O. region of Catalan. After studying economics in Barcelona, Xavier stayed in Catalan’s capital working for large companies through most of the 90s. In 1997, he decided to return to his native home to start the Cellers Sant Rafel project, a 100% family owned and managed company.
Cellers Sant Rafel is located at an old farm that historically produced wine but had not been operational for over 15 years. Impressive work was done to create terraces on the mountain slopes for vines. All of the terraces were constructed from local stones representing the traditional old style of winemaking in Monstant when people would work very hard to create a small piece of land to grow vines.
The intense work of rebuilding the winery and reviving the vineyards has paid off. Today, Sant Rafel produces grapes perfectly balanced by hot and dry summer days and fresh breezes from the Mediterranean sea, only 10 miles away. The Sant Rafel Estate prides itself in full, ripe Grenache with power, concentration, and a fresh and fruity taste.
