About the Winery
The Chiaromonte family has been dedicated to the production of great wines from Puglia since their foundation in 1826, nearly 200 years ago. In recent years, Nicola Chiaromonte, as owner and winemaker, has worked hard to expand and improve the quality of their wines to reach internationally recognized standards of the highest quality. A specialist in the Primitivo variety, all of their vines are bush-trained in the ancient, free-standing style known as alberello. As of 2009, all of the vineyards are certified organic. Nicola makes all of his wines exclusively in stainless steel in order to preserve the pure fruit flavors. The grapes are destemmed, then fed by gravity into tanks were they are left to ferment in whole clusters with their own yeasts before they are crushed in hand-cranks presses.
Chiaromonte believes in respect for the region by focusing on excellence for its grapes, a perfect understanding of the environment and the raw materials to guarantee consistent quality and distinct personality for his wines. His dedication is perfectly matched to his specific region, called Gioia del Colle. This region, on the Western side of the Salento, has been identified as the original homeland of Primitivo. With its high altitudes that give the wines great freshness and particular soils composed of red, iron-rich limestone soils, Gioia del Colle produces big wines that maintain outstanding balance, minerality, nuance, purity and complexity and is truly the source for the best Primitivos.
